Inktober Day 8: Toad – I consider this particular American toad to be my special friend (though whether the feeling is mutual, I cannot say). This past summer, I took a beautiful 4-hour kayak paddle on an Adirondack lake. Afterwards, when I hauled the kayak back ashore, I looked under my seat for a wayward water bottle, and saw this toad’s little face staring back at me. He must have been with me the entire time, taking a ride, not knowing what in the hell was going on. I inner-shrieked with glee, and immediately scooped him up. When I held him out by some grasses near the water, he did not leave my hand. We hung out for a good 5 minutes, warming up in the sun, until he finally hopped off to live the rest of his toad life. Thanks for your brief company, little friend!
