The Met Branch Trail , Washington, DC

I painted this mural on DC's brand new Metropolitan Branch Trail with the support of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and DC Department of Transportation. The mission was to create a mural that the community could help to paint, while at the same time discouraging illegal graffiti tagging and making a beautiful and comfortable place on the trail for people to sit. As you can see from the photos, this area is ripe with graffiti - things seem to get tagged within nano seconds of its placement here.

My first step was to prime the two stone seating areas that would soon be muralized. Even though I was simply painting the structures white, it instigated a lot of smiles, thank yous, and conversations with the trail users.

The day of the mural painting was even more rewarding. Unbelievably hot and muggy, the community spirit overcame the weather. Many folks stopped by to paint a few brush strokes, some staying for hours to leave their mark on the mural. All ages too, and all totally enthusiastic. It was a reaffirming kind of experience - and it reinforced the importance of community involvement in art and place. Here are some snap shots of the day:
